Strong for Life’s Family Therapy make use of evidence-based Integrative Psychotherapy and Behavioural Psychology modalities to resolve relational conflicts and improve communication within family systems.
In simple terms, a family is a group of individuals who share a sense of belonging and care for each other. Various combinations of loved ones can make up a family therapy group, such as parents/guardians and their children, siblings, grandparents, aunts and uncles, friends, and kinship caregivers. In family therapy, behaviors and relationships within the family are improved through various Integrative Psychotherapy and Behavioural Psychology modalities, know as Family Therapy Modalities.
Major s in Family Therapy include structural, strategic, systemic, Bowenian (intergenerational), and narrative therapies, along with cognitive-behavioural (CBT) and emotionally focused therapy (EFT). These methods focus on restructuring family dynamics, changing behavioural patterns, and fostering healthier communication to address issues like addiction, behavioural problems, or trauma.
Structural Family Therapy:
Focuses on adjusting the family’s organization, including boundaries, hierarchies, and subsystems to improve interactional patterns.
Strategic Family Therapy:
A short-term approach where the therapist provides specific directives to solve immediate behavioural problems.
Systemic Family Therapy:
Analyses the family as a whole system, examining how problems arise from interactions within various contexts (e.g., cultural, social).
Bowenian (Intergenerational) Therapy:
Focuses on reducing chronic anxiety and improving differentiation of self by analysing generational family patterns and history.
Narrative Therapy:
Helps families externalize problems and reframe their “narrative” or stories to foster healthier, more empowered perspectives.
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT):
Addresses maladaptive behaviours and distorted thinking patterns within the family unit to improve interactions.
Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT):
Primarily targets repairing emotional bonds, trust, and secure attachment within relationships.
Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT):
Concentrates on finding solutions by utilizing the family’s strengths and identifying times when the problem did not exist.
Often, it is prudent for families to seek family therapy when they are faced with one or more of the following challenges, among others:
Turbulent relationships among family members
Stress
Anger
A lack of communication
A traumatic experience (physical or emotional)
Living with a chronic or acute illness in a family member, for example multiple sclerosis, cancer, stroke, chronic pain, or an autoimmune disease
Grief associated with a loved one’s loss/passing
Relationship or divorce related concerns
Becoming accustomed to sudden changes, such as job termination, relocation, or imprisonment
Conditions affecting an individual or family’s mental health and well-being, such as depression, anxiety disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), eating disorders (e.g., anorexia), mood disorders (e.g., bipolar disorder), personality disorders (e.g., borderline personality disorder) and schizophrenia.
Substance use disorder.
Children with behavioral disorders, such as Conduct disorder, Disruptive mood dysregulation disorder (DMDD), and Oppositional defiant disorder (ODD).
Families with Neurodivergent members struggling with autism spectrum disorders or attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).
At Strong for Life Family Therapy, we focus on improving communication, resolving conflicts, and strengthening relationships within a family. Strong for Life Family Therapy‘s approach facilitates family members to perceive problems in terms of patterns rather than individual problems. This allows family members to make sense of behaviors, develop trust, and overcome challenges such as divorce, addiction, or mental illness.
In fact, our Strong for Life Integrative Therapy (Psycho-Behavioural) therapeutic interventions are not only highly effective to Family Therapy but also highly relevant in a number of different contexts, including Couple Therapy, Child-play Therapy, in group settings, addiction recovery and rehabilitation centers as well as, most notably, also in Family Law and Divorce Mediation and High Conflict and Complex Divorce Cases involving malicious opponents, for example Narcissists and Psychopaths, and their related Abuse.
Purpose:
The primary goal is to nurture change, develop healthier interaction patterns, and create a more functional family environment.
Participants:
While often involving parents and children, it can include any combination of family members, such as grandparents or extended family.
Issues Addressed:
It is effective for addressing child/adolescent behavioural issues, addiction, grief, divorce, financial struggles, and mental health diagnoses within the family.

Our psychotherapists frequently use this approach to work with children with behavioral problems. This technique evaluates the family dynamics that may have contributed to the child's problematic behavior, facilitates the development of communication skills, and emphasizes the importance of positive reinforcement.

In this short-term family therapy, positive structural and behavioral changes are being made within the family. It recognizes the importance of the family in a child's life and development. Our therapists might apply this approach in families with behaviorally challenging children.

The purpose of this type of therapy is to examine the structure of the family's inner relationships, boundaries, and hierarchy. During therapy sessions, our therapists guide families towards discovering alternative ways to relate. Interactions within the family are emphasized as a key factor in improving family relations.

In systemic family therapy, the family's issues are considered in relation to their social context. For example, our therapist will examine how one family member functions as a partner, as a parent, and as a child. Context refers to cultural, religious, and political ideologies, as well as socio-economic position. In this approach, contextual factors contribute significantly to the development of psychological and emotional skills.
